Cult of the Possessed - Work in Progress

 Working on the docks board has definitely lead me to lean into nautical themed warbands more recently.  The Scibor pirate dwarf range was perfect for Dwarf Treasure Hunter's, but it also drew my attention to their Cthulhu range. I thought the Cthulhu model would be great for a possessed model and then there were also heaps of generic cultists.  This would be the beginnings of my "Cult of the Deep", a Stromfels worshipping chaos cult.

Possessed:



Many, many years ago I bought a Mantic Sci-fi terrain crate which included an assortment of minis. Unfortunately, the quality wasn't great, so they have sat in a drawer until now.  One of the big aliens looked like it had a horseshoe crab carapace and would be perfect for kit-bashing a possessed.  I replaced its head and claw with parts from a 40k ogryn (perhaps a glimpse of its former humanity?).  I did have to sculpt some hooves in green stuff - not 100% happy with them but it will have to do.  I also sculpted a few barnacles on the carapace while I had the green stuff out.  The other possessed is the Scibor model with a simple arm swap (with the claw removed from the first model).

Mutants:


The basis for the mutants is the Frostgrave cultist box.  I've added a claw to one (from the same Mantic Sci-fi box) and an extra arm to the other.

Magister and Brethren:



No real conversions necessary on these - I'm just using the Scibor cultists which are incredibly characterful.  I have added a few sheathed daggers/swords and a bow and quiver given not all the miniatures are modelled with weapons. 

Darksouls:


The big guy is from the Warhammer Underworlds Witch Hunter Warband.  I shaved off all the stakes from his armour and added a hooded cultist head.  The others are just Frostgrave cultists equipped with two-handed weapons.

Beastmen:


Although the GW models are exclusively "goatmen", the lore does support other types of animals (plenty in the old Gotrek and Felix books). Given the nautical theme I sourced some Deep One miniatures off Etsy to serve as beastmen.  One of the models came without a weapon so I created a flail out of a mace and jewellers chain.

Next step - painting things up!

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt I

I have been really happy with how the ruined temple of Myrmidia is coming together.  I think it has a distinct style for the stonework and I also really like how well it combines with plastic/resin kits and the fact I can use super glue (which is not so easy with foam).  All of that has inspired me to create a new 3 foot by 3 foot Mordheim docks board in the same style.  I wanted to share my plan, my process and some progress photos.  I expect that there will be many more updates to come as this will take a while!! Plan: The objective with the table is to have a single 3x3 foot table with: - multiple levels to eliminate firing lanes - a large resin pour dock with jetties and moored ships - a terminating road and small square - a consistent style that will tie into my temple board and some of my other projects Materials: - The board itself is a 3 foot by 3 foot framed canvas.  I read somewhere that these can be used for gaming tables and I'm keen to try it out....

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt IV

A bank holiday today which means more work on the Mordheim board.  With the paving complete, it's time to add a few skulls and skeletons and add grout and sand.  Managed to do a first pass of the entire board in a couple of hours and its looking good. Step one is to take the grout mix (one part grout to three parts sand) and pile it on top of the paving. Using an old paint brush, I spread it around making sure it gets down into all the gaps.  I find diagonal strokes are best to ensure you are not brushing it out of the gaps. After a quick spray of isopropyl alcohol, I use a syringe to drop watered-down PVA into all the grout lines. It's a slow process but it looks really good!! Prior to grouting I added a few skulls and skeletons.  That way they look they are partially buried in the dirt and rubble when the grouting is done.  I'm using a cheap box of skeletons (not GW) plus the GW skulls box.   I've been pretty haphazard in the assembly as I know it is...

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt III

Another weekend has come and gone, and a little more progress has been made on this Mordheim board.  My focus has been on the dock area itself and that means building jetties.  Very straight forward - balsa for the posts and supports, and coffee stir sticks for the planking.  I wanted two separate jetties running perpendicular to the dock - one at a lower level so that it would be more suitable for smaller vessels to dock, and the other at the regular height for the bigger ship.  I think I'm going to have to add some little ladders to the smaller one regardless. I've also smashed out a heap of paving on the top surface.  Deeply regretting cutting the dock in at a slight angle as it means cutting a lot of custom tiles to fit, but it is looking pretty good and almost finished!! The remaining steps will be to add sand and grout between the pavers, and random rubble and skeletons to the board, and also to prep the boats.  I want to kit-bash a figurehead on to t...
