Starting a Warhammer Fantasy Army
I've been a huge fan of Moshartz ever since he started Der Gaukler Mordheim fanzine. Fortuitously, supporting him on Patreon meant I have also been receiving cool miniatures for Mordheim every couple of months. He has produced some really characterful dreg sculpts which capture the look of the original dregs perfectly, but there are also some great zombies and a necromancer model too. This inspired me to start working an Undead warband. I got the Cursed City box as a cheap way to acquire a horde of skeletons and zombies and also picked up some ghouls and dire wolves. Before long, I not only had enough miniatures for a warband, but the start of a small undead army. With The Old World making a return at around the same time, I thought I'd pull the trigger and build a full army - something I've never actually done before. While Vampire Counts are not officially part of The Old World, there is a Legacy Army List available, so I grabbed the pdf and got to work. In this post, I just want to outline my plans - the units and heroes I want to collect - and then I can subsequently provide updates as they are built and painted.
Heroes:
- Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon - definitely want an opportunity to kit-bash a unique army general
- Vampire on foot - another hero that can bolster blocks of skeletons or zombies
- Necromancer(s) - seems like a must have
- Wight Lord/King mounted - options for battle standard bearer
- Wight Lord/King on foot - options for battle standard bearer
- Tomb Banshee - to unlock the ability to add ethereal units which I may want
Units:
- Dire wolves - good boys
- Zombies - initially a big tar pit of 30-40, with the potential to add another big unit
- Skeleton Spearmen - because I love the look of them
- Grave Guard - these will be more core shock troops - a unit of 20-30 would be ideal
- Grave Guard (alternate) - I'm thinking of proxying Nighthaunts as Grave Guard if I run a more ethereal army.
- Black Knights - more wights with the movement to flank and charge
- Hexwraiths - spooky horsemen to harass war machines
- Spirit hosts - thematic additions for an ethereal themed list
I'm still undecided whether I want any ghouls or chariots. I don't really like the current Age or Sigmar chariots so would probably need to either scratch build something or hunt down an old Black Coach.
I am at a point where I have collected most of the boxes and bits I'll need, so now it's just a matter of building and eventually painting everything, so stay tuned!!
