Mordheim Terrain - Garden of Morr

With the Christmas holidays comes time to devote to hobby projects - both new and old.  One project I've been wanting to tick off for a while is a Garden of Morr / Graveyard.  Here is my progress so far.

Finished graveyard board at the zenithal stage.

I bought a couple of the new GW mausoleum kits during the year, along with a heap of Renedra plastic fence kits and a couple of sprues of gravestones.  I also had a 2' x 3' picture frame, which was the perfect size for a graveyard at scale, which I had bought to get clear plastic sheeting for the resin dam on the docks board. Along with some foam, cork sheets and 3D printed trees, I had all the materials I needed.

The first step was to plan a layout.  I knew I wanted:

- a raised area in one corner sloping down to the graveyard

- at least one mausoleum built into the hillside

- a graveyard keeper's / Priest of Morr's cottage complete with tools and unused coffins and gravestones

- a couple of low hills; and

- a low wall/ fence around the entire board.

I also I knew I wanted the terrain playable as a standalone board, or as a piece on a larger table.  This meant I wanted all the sides fully detailed and stairs up from table level.

I've tried to capture the steps I followed below:

Packing out the poster frame with the first layer of corrugated carboard.

I've added another layer of cardboard to ensure the surface was flush with the cork tiles (visible on the corners of the board), and added EVA foam for the low hills and packing foam for the raised area and building in the bottom corner.  I've also glued down some 3D printed trees.

The EVA hills were smoothed out initially with spak filla (you can still see the pink hue).

I then mixed up my own sculptamould using plaster, water and tissues to get a slope down from the cottage and to ensure the mausoleum was embedded in the hillside.

Next, I added cork edging tiles around the entire board and added the iron fencing (from Renedra).  To ensure a strong bond, I add strips of cork on either side of the fence too.  You can also see that I've crafted a quick gravekeepers building - cladding the foam in thin cork and card, and adding a foamcore structure to the side of the tower.

I added the sculptamould mix across all the hills, added gravestones (also Renedra), and then mixed up a batch of brown acrylic caulking, sand, and grout to coat the entire earth areas of the board.  You can also see the simple roof cladding using thin card.

All that was left was to take the whole board outside and prime it black, and then give it a zenithal highlight with white.  It's probably perfect for Frostgrave at this point, but I'll paint it in the same way as my other Mordheim terrain to ensure it fits in.

I'll get this painted over the next couple of weeks and post the finished product.  I've also been playing around with some photography techniques to capture finished terrain (both this one and others) and building an Undead warband.  Stay tuned...
