Mordheim Board - Docks Pt IV

Image
A bank holiday today which means more work on the Mordheim board.  With the paving complete, it's time to add a few skulls and skeletons and add grout and sand.  Managed to do a first pass of the entire board in a couple of hours and its looking good. Step one is to take the grout mix (one part grout to three parts sand) and pile it on top of the paving. Using an old paint brush, I spread it around making sure it gets down into all the gaps.  I find diagonal strokes are best to ensure you are not brushing it out of the gaps. After a quick spray of isopropyl alcohol, I use a syringe to drop watered-down PVA into all the grout lines. It's a slow process but it looks really good!! Prior to grouting I added a few skulls and skeletons.  That way they look they are partially buried in the dirt and rubble when the grouting is done.  I'm using a cheap box of skeletons (not GW) plus the GW skulls box.   I've been pretty haphazard in the assembly as I know it is...

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt III

Image
Another weekend has come and gone, and a little more progress has been made on this Mordheim board.  My focus has been on the dock area itself and that means building jetties.  Very straight forward - balsa for the posts and supports, and coffee stir sticks for the planking.  I wanted two separate jetties running perpendicular to the dock - one at a lower level so that it would be more suitable for smaller vessels to dock, and the other at the regular height for the bigger ship.  I think I'm going to have to add some little ladders to the smaller one regardless. I've also smashed out a heap of paving on the top surface.  Deeply regretting cutting the dock in at a slight angle as it means cutting a lot of custom tiles to fit, but it is looking pretty good and almost finished!! The remaining steps will be to add sand and grout between the pavers, and random rubble and skeletons to the board, and also to prep the boats.  I want to kit-bash a figurehead on to t...

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt II

Image
Slow but steady progress continues on the Mordheim docks board.  I have a long weekend and I am making the most of it!!  I've completed all the required vertical bricking and buttresses on the landside and riverside and am looking forward to working on the jetties and ships. The lower tier is complete (subject to some additional sand/grout/rubble) including the stonework on the walls.  I used the same technique as I did for the roads - 1 x 2 cm pieces of cork and card stuck with wood glue.  I then come back in and create buttresses out of the thicker 6mm cork tiles.  I used the distance between buttresses on the right for the rest of the board so it looked consistent (~5.5cm gaps). I find it helps to flip the board onto its side to lay the vertical bricks.  It also stops them from sliding down the wall if there is a lot of glue underneath.  Here is the board from the other side.  You can see the dock area with some the 3d printed boats I'm going t...

Mordheim Board - Docks Pt I

I have been really happy with how the ruined temple of Myrmidia is coming together.  I think it has a distinct style for the stonework and I also really like how well it combines with plastic/resin kits and the fact I can use super glue (which is not so easy with foam).  All of that has inspired me to create a new 3 foot by 3 foot Mordheim docks board in the same style.  I wanted to share my plan, my process and some progress photos.  I expect that there will be many more updates to come as this will take a while!! Plan: The objective with the table is to have a single 3x3 foot table with: - multiple levels to eliminate firing lanes - a large resin pour dock with jetties and moored ships - a terminating road and small square - a consistent style that will tie into my temple board and some of my other projects Materials: - The board itself is a 3 foot by 3 foot framed canvas.  I read somewhere that these can be used for gaming tables and I'm keen to try it out....

Mordheim Terrain - Ruined Temple Pt II

Image
I have been slowly making progress on this piece.  With the primary structure complete I've been adding details including ramshackle platforms (to create some verticality), ladders and rubble piles in the interior, and a couple of grisly thematic skeletons.  Last additions will be a couple of rats and a raven or two.  In parallel, I've started on 2 separate 3x3 foot tables - a docks board and a street board.  Platforms at the front and rear corner are visible.  These have been added by mercenaries (or skaven) over time.  The structure looks like it has been used by many factions over the years. Another shot from the back showing the internal rubble piles and the ladders and catwalks to get to the roof. The remains of an unfortunate beastman, 'the Raven King', have been hung inside the temple.   A skeleton, or what remains of one, stands vigil at the front of the church.  They mutely survey the city from their pillar...

Dwarf Treasure Hunters - Work in Progress

Image
With low motivation to paint at the moment I've been focusing my time on building more warbands.  I am currently working on some dockside boards for my new Mordheim table complete with a boat, which got me thinking about maritime themed warbands I could pull together.  The first of these is a group of dwarf Treasure Hunters from Barak Varr.  This gave me an excuse to check out the Scibor pirate dwarf range! Noble and Engineer: For my heroes I've tried to steer away from the more 'piratey' sculpts - they are a noble and engineer after all.  It feels wrong to have dwarves who aren't equipped with axes, hammers or both, but cutlasses it is for this crew.  I've done some very simple planking bases for both using coffee stir sticks. Slayers: I have a ton of slayer models lying around including a few leftover from my slayer cult.  I really like the guy on the left - no mohawk when you are bald.  He looks really laid back whereas his compatriot on the right l...

Mordheim Terrain - Ruined Temple Pt I

Image
With the basic design and structure in place, I'd like to share one of my current Mordheim terrain projects, a ruined temple of Mymidia.  I've basically built a riser out of foam and clad it in cork 'flagstones'.  On this base I've assemble some of the Pegasus gothic building kits to get a temple structure.  Out back I've added a small graveyard using some plastic fencing and graves I had lying around. The lion reliefs on either side of the front steps are actually tank panels from Scibor miniatures.  Next steps for this structure is to add some playable surfaces higher in the structure (skaven walkways and platforms), a copper roof to the front section, and also add some details (ravens, rats, skeletons etc.) The imposing entry to the temple of Myrmidia.  The visitor is greeted by two lions rampant at the front steps. Front arial shot showing the flying buttresses and size of the piece.  This is almost a playable board in its own right. Back arial vi...

Mordheim Counters & Objectives - Work in Progress

Image
I've amassed quite a few odds and ends over the past couple of years and decided to sit down and create some tokens and objective markers for Mordheim.  The bulk of the resin items are from Kromlech including the crystals (wyrdstone!), books, chests and barrels.  The blue resin items are 3D printed crates and chests. The flagstone bases are 'Dungeon Stone' from Back to Base-ix.  The other bases are old GW square bases with chopped up coffee stir sticks. I'm hoping to add some house rules to incorporate more secondary objectives into the Mordheim scenarios.  A lot of the core scenarios are very similar, and often it would be good to have something additional at stake, particularly for weaker warbands.

Beastman Raiders - Work in Progress

Image
I've pulled together the beginnings of a Beastman Raider warband.  Looking forward to trying these out - particularly the Minotaur.  Heroes: Chieftan: This is the GW Beastlord model from Warhammer Underworlds.  I've added a skull trophy and added some stonework to the base to tie in with the rest of the warband.  Not sure whether I'll use this model as my leader yet... Bestigors: These guys are from the Cursed Herd by Mierce Miniatures.  I find the GW Bestigors are not really any different in size from the Gors, so I've opted to go with the larger Mierce models for my Bestigors (GW Bestigor pictured for scale). I've added some more skull trophies (a running theme for this warband) and based them on 40mm 'Ruins' resin bases by Back 2 Base-ix. Centigor: This is the only heavily converted mini in the warband. The starting point is a Centaur model from Scibor (part of their chaos dwarf range).  I've done a head swap with a GW one from the plastic Bestigor ki...
